Maine- the state that revives and rejuvenates. Driving through Maine gives you opportunity to experience nature in its simplest beauty. The rugged coasting offers uplifting scenery and towns present locals that are laid-back and welcoming.
Driving up north from Portsmouth, a stop has to be made at Ogunquit. It is a very endearing, picturesque town that has become famous for its charm and draws big crowds especially in the summer time.
This little fishing village has turned into a popular destination due to its vibrant art scene and breathtaking views. Ogunquit supposedly means ‘beautiful place by the sea’ and the Abenaki tribe aptly chose this name.
It is hard to find parking to accommodate the eager visitors so its best to find a good public parking lot and then one is free to explore the quaint town. The first item on the agenda has to be the famous paved cliff walk called Marginal Way.
It certainly is not marginal by any standard! It was named because the path is basically a ‘margin’ between land and sea.
It is a beautiful, easy and uplifting walk for about one and a quarter mile along the ocean. Anywhere you look you are rewarded by the manicured, delightful homes on one side and the steep overlook on the other.
The views are breathtaking and there are plenty of benches available to stop and gather your thoughts, capture memorable pictures or simply take in the beauty around you.
We had lunch at the ever-popular Barnacle Billy’s for the famous lobster rolls. We sat on the lovely sundeck and enjoyed the views of Perkins Cove Harbor.
Right on cue, the drawbridge opens gracefully.
